Music, brightness and windows

Change volume and brightness with the scroll wheel, control your music, and move or switch windows from a pill.

Control volume and playback

Hold your ring shortcut and scroll to change the volume. Open Settings, then Media, to change how it behaves.

In a pill’s editor, choose Add an action, then Control the music, for Play or pause, Next track, Previous track, Volume up, Volume down, Mute or unmute, or Change volume by. The action uses the default player unless you pick a Player.

If the player you chose isn’t playing sound, Rondell says so and doesn’t change another app’s volume.

  • Default player: Now playing (the app Windows shows as playing), Windows volume (every app at once), or a specific app.
  • Volume step: how much each notch of the wheel changes the volume.
  • Volume look: Card, Round or Bar. Overlay time sets how long it stays on screen.
  • Show song: shows the song that’s playing with the volume. Song look (Pill, Card or Tray) appears when Volume look isn’t Card.
  • Volume sound: the tick played with each change.

Adjust brightness

Brightness by wheel is off until you pick a key. Open Settings, then Media, and set Brightness key to Shift, Ctrl or Alt. Then hold your ring shortcut and that key, and scroll to change the brightness of the screen under the pointer. Brightness step sets how much each notch changes it.

Laptop screens work as they are. Some external monitors need a brightness control option turned on in the monitor’s own menu. A screen that offers no brightness control can’t be changed this way.

Make a scroll pill

In the pill editor, set a pill’s Runs on to Scroll. Scrolling over that pill in the ring then runs its actions, and the ring stays open. Per notch sets how much each notch counts for.

The ready-made pills Spotify volume and Brightness are built this way.

Manage windows

In a pill’s editor, choose Add an action, then Window, and set What to do: Bring to front, Close, Minimize, Maximize, Restore, Keep on top, Move to or Next window. Bring to front starts the app if it isn’t open. Next window switches to the next window of the same app.

“Which window” is The window in front or An app’s window. If you pick an app, choose it from the list of open apps.

Move to puts a window on a Screen (Same screen, Main screen, 2nd screen and so on) at a Place: Left half, Right half, thirds, four quarters, Whole screen or Custom. Custom takes From left, From top, Width and Height as percentages of the screen.

Keep on top has an On top setting: Switch on or off, Turn on or Turn off.

Keep awake, theme and brightness from a pill

In a pill’s editor, choose Add an action, then System, and set What to do.

  • Keep awake: “How long” is Until turned off, For a while (set Minutes) or Turn off. Screen stays on keeps the display on too. While it’s on, the tray menu shows Stop keeping awake.
  • Theme: Switch light or dark, Light or Dark. Apply to chooses Apps and Windows or Apps only. This changes Windows, not Rondell’s own look; that’s under Theme in Settings.
  • Brightness: Change is Set to, Up by or Down by, with a Level or Amount from 0 to 100. Screen picks All screens, Screen under the mouse, Main screen or a numbered screen.
